The airport initially began as a gravel runway in the early 1970's and was paved and expanded in the 1980's. During the 1980's and into the 1990's NorOnt Air provided air services to the area. In the late 1990's NorOnt Air closed shop due to provincial downsizing and other than a few attempts, air service was never fully re-established.
