LIFESAVING SOCIETY SWIM PROGRAM
Never too young to learn, Never too old to start.
The Lifesaving Society is dedicated to creating Water Smart ® kids. Water Smart ® kids know how to swim and behave safely in and around the water. The Lifesaving Society’s Swim Program makes sure that your children are Water Smart ® before they get in too deep. It is a complete program from Parent and Tot through to Leadership and is stroke and skill driven. The program is designed to make learning fun. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION
With the LifeSaving Society program the instructors are continuously evaluating the participant. As they progress from level to level the Instructor begins to work on the next level immediately. On the last class a progress memo is distributed to each student to outline their accomplishments and indicate what level to register them in next time.
WE EMPHASIZE ACHIEVEMENT
Parents, during each and every session your child is enrolled in lessons, he or she is learning, experiencing and achieving! During the lessons some children will progress to the next level and others will continue to work at the same level. At the end of a session, if your child does not move to the next level, please don’t consider it a failure. Unfortunately some participants become extremely stressed on the last day while waiting for a pass or fail. As instructors we work hard to reduce this stress by using continuous
evaluation and by emphasizing achievements. With the standards required with the LifeSaving Program it is quite probable that candidates will remain in each level, learning and excelling, for many sessions.
The Lifesaving Society provides a fun and challenging progression of lifesaving training programs. The Junior Lifeguard Club, Canadian Swim Patrol, and 3 Bronze medal awards are designed for swimmers between 8 and 15 years of age. Our first aid certifications focus on the practical ABCs of lifesaving.
SWIM PATROL
The Swim Patrol provides enriched training for those who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. Swim Patrol’s three levels - Rookie, Ranger, and Star - continue to develop participants’ swim strokes and provide the skill foundation that prepares them for success in the Society’s Bronze medal awards.
Rookie Patrol - Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke; lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS & treatment for bleeding.
Ranger Patrol - Swimmers develop better strokes over 75m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving Sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock & obstructed airway procedures.
Star Patrol - Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts, 300m timed swims and a 25m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone, joint injuries & respiratory
emergencies including asthma & lergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victims
removals & rolling over & supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.
Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. *Bronze Medallion candidates require their own CPR face shield.
Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidate strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles & techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies, it is a prerequisite for advanced training in the Society's National Lifeguard and leadership certificate programs.
