Council encourages the public to share their information and thoughts with them and invite members of the public who feel strongly about a public issue or a local concern to voice their opinion(s).
Because many issues can be resolved at the staff level, it is recommended that citizens discuss their concerns with Town Staff prior to appearing before Council. Communication with Town Staff can provide the public with valuable background information on the issue in question, and/or recommend appropriate next steps that can bring resolve and help set the stage for a meaningful and constructive delegation/presentation with Council. For information on whom to speak to, please contact the Clerk's Office at 705-567-9361 Ext. 238 or email [email protected].
Requesting an Appearance Before Council
If you wish to appear before Council, please submit your request in writing (email or paper form) along with any supporting documentation to the Clerk's Office. Requests may be submitted electronically by email or printed and mailed to:
Attention: Municipal Clerk
The Corporation of the Town of Kirkland Lake
P.O. Box 1757, 3 Kirkland St.W.
Kirkland Lake, ON P2N 3P4
Email: [email protected]
The request must be received by the Clerk's Office no later than Friday at 12:00 PM (noon) prior to the Council meeting date requestors are identifying to present. This allows for time to review the request, to advise the Mayor and Council and, if necessary, conduct background research into the issue. The Municipal Clerk will notify and confirm with requestors as to which date they are invited to address Council.
Corresponding with Council (in writing rather than delegating/presenting in person)
If a member of the public has an issue of importance, however, does not wish to present/delegate at a Council Meeting, persons may address a letter to the Municipal Clerk or a member of Council.
All letters are shared with members of Council and the Chief Administrative Officer.
Letters can be dropped off to the attention of the Municipal Clerk or sent via email at the contact information supplied above.
Appearing Before Council
Public delegations/presentations are always the first item(s) to be heard on Council's meeting agenda. The Mayor or Chair will invite delegations to a podium to speak on their issues. Delegations/presentations are provided a maximum of 10 minutes in duration in accordance with Council's Procedural By-Law.
Following-up on Petitions, Delegations, and Presentations
Council normally takes some time to review the information supplied in petitions/delegations/presentations before deciding what action to take on an issue. If a member of the public would like clarification on an issue discussed, or the status of a decision, they are welcomed to reach out to the Clerk's Office at the contact information listed above.
